MG MGB Technical - Overdrive switch

Hi, I'm fitting a new overdrive switch in the gearknob. At the moment there is just a toggle switch taped to the top of the gearknob. How do I get the gearknob off, do I solder the wires on, and which side does the red wire go. any help appreciated, thanks.

CC,

the wires are routed through the hollow gear lever and come out underneath the pvc gater/rubber seal at the console.
You aught to loosen the four bolts of the gater ring to get exess there.

Hope this helps

For '77-'80 shift knobs, just pop the top of the knob off, route the wires through the lever, replace the top with the one that has a slide switch.

For good measure add in in-line fuse where the white/brown of the main harness joins the white of the gearbox harness in the mass of connectors by the fusebox. The gear lever OD switch wiring has been known to chafe through and short out, which can destroy both harnesses if not the car.

And while you are at it add another in the fuel pump circuit where the white from the rear harness joins the same 4-way connector. Whilst this is not flexed unduly it can again destroy both harnesses, it had happened on both my cars in the past.
