MG MGB Technical - Overheating? Here is another hand dealt by Fate.
I had an interesting thing happen yesterday in our 108 F. degree heat. My GT usually faces such heat with aplomb, temp rising to just a bit beyond N. but I was surprised to see the temp gauge climb during a short trip across town. When I got out of the car and popped the hood, here was the forward hunk of hood insulation hanging down from the front edge back to the impression of the radiator support top seal. Apparently it had been forced down in front of the air flow to the radiator after the glue gave up the ghost. I peeled the hood liner off, threw it in the rear deck, and drove home, temp dropping back to usual. I reglued the liner and, just in case, I also used a piece of thin spring metal to span the opening under the hood between the perimeter bracing and keep the front section of the liner in place. I mention this for others to consider if they have a sudden change in cooling like this. |

Gee Bob, you should take a run down to Texas to cool off! Highs in the 80's this weekend. Last week, during the NAMGBR 2002 national, we were cooler than about 90% of the rest of the country! Go figure. Speaking of cooling changes, I did find out during John Twist's tech session at the meet why my car was running hotter at idle than it had in the past. Seems that when I pulled my engine a couple months ago for gasket and bearing replacement I put my fan on backwards. Now I know for sure: The edges of the fan with the notches are the LEADING edges. Will flip it this W/E and see how much difference it makes. |
