MG MGB Technical - Oversize Brake master cylinder parts

I have an early '74 MGB with a VERY leaky brake master cylinder. Fluid poured in one day will be on the driver's shoes the next. It is a Beck Arnley-Worldparts rebuilt unit that has a decal on it stating that it has an oversize bore and requires oversize pistons and rubber seals to be "rebuilt" again. It suggests that those parts are available from my friendly local Beck Arnley distributor. Unfortunately the local BA guy says that those parts are no longer available. Moss Motors shows a rebuild kit here, http://www.mossmotors.com/Shop/ViewProducts.aspx?PlateIndexID=29029#top but doesn't say that the kit is oversize. My guess is that it's not.

Any ideas? Are the parts really not that special? Should I be able to duplicate them at a brake specialty shop?
Chuck Asbury

Those parts really should be readily available. You might even try online at CSKauto.com?

I can't make CSKauto.com come up, even with a www and/or an http. in front of it. Are you sure of the name?
Chuck Asbury

Try these folks. They have a pretty good selection of everything.

Talk to your local mechanic. The odds of you polishing an oversize bore and getting it to not leak approach -0-. Everybody thats been there and done that, doesn't do it again. Buy a new master cylinder.

It works for me! If not, Google it and it will come up. Or google Checker, Kragen, or Schucks.

Better yet, just try this: http://www.beckarnley.com/

Hi,

In 1973 M-cylinder was supposed to be 3/4in. and thwere is only an overbore MGB-Gt 741/2 with 13/16in. bore.

Kit number from United is for:
3/4= #1035

13/16= #1134

Wish it could help.

At Rock auto they offer 2 models of M/C . for around $91 & $162, brand new. If your cylinder wall is rusted you will go nowhere in replacing kit.

Cheers,

JGC

Chuck:

Beck Arnley and Roadstar Nelson both manufactured their own oversize pistons for a number of master cylinders. These were only slightly oversize and the seals were custom made, not standard sizes. This practice was prevalent enough that White Post have had to have original spec pistons fabricated for some applications to be able to sleeve and rebuild cylinders back to stock. I ran into this when investigating problems with MGA master cylinders with non-stock pistons.

On top of it, the 68-76 cylinder is not an easy one to rebuild. Your best bet would be to either bite the bullet for a new one, which are still being made by Delphi-Lockheed, or buy a quality rebuilt unit from a reputable source.

JGC: Not to cast aspersions at Rock Auto, but those price listings can not be correct for a new 68-76 MGB brake master cylinder. The price from the manufacturer is not that cheap.

hope this helps.

Well Kelvin,

Have a look there:

http://www.rockauto.com/catalog/catalog.php?carcode=1204782&parttype=1836

I did not have that '74 prices. They are at
$92 & $165,

Ciao,

P.S. Why pay more when you can pay less!!!
Jean Guy Catford

JGC: Thanks for the link. Be interested to see what they are selling, guess I have to order one and see. I don't think that they are the original Delphi-Lockheed, but one can never tell till you have it in bits.

Gordon at the Bhive has the '68-'74 Master Cylinder on sale for $169.

Zach

Does the B-Hive's master cylinder say LUCAS on the side? http://www.thebhive.com/images/259-364.jpg I don't think my original does, although it's 20 miles from here at my shop right now. It would appear to me that this may be a poor knockoff.

I found that one of my parts cars has an original MC. As soon as it warms up a bit, I'll go out back and remove it to see if the incorrect kit I got for the oversized MC will fit it.

If my re-kitting is not successful, I'll get with Victorai British up the road. I've kitted many MCs, and been happy with the vast majority. We'll see.
Chuck Asbury

Chuck,

I would be surprised if Gordon were selling "poor knockoff" parts. I have ordered many parts from him since buying my MG about five years ago.

Although after checking my MG file, I found that I purchased the master cylinder for my '73 B from the Little British car company.

Call Gordon and he will tell you if it's a knock-off part. He does usually carry after market wheel cylinders but all the master cylinders I have seen on his tables at shows were Lockheed, now Delphi.
