MG MGB Technical - Pack away hood
I am going to buy a new hood for my B, any info on which make is the best, i am also looking for any info on fitting, what tips has anyone got, and what sort of fit did you get, many thanks A.T |

No experience of buying new, primarily because of the very poor fit I have seen on some other cars so I've kept the one I have! A common problem seems to be not enough width in them over the drop-glasses, which leaves a gaping hole above the raised window for rain to blow in. Fortunately the bottom of the range vinyl that came with the roadster 25 years ago was almost new, and is still as sound. On that the gutters come to the top of the glass, and the internal flap lies against the glass. Some come with header rail already fitted so in theory there isn't much more than four screws to fit it, but that takes no account of individual screen alignment and other dimensional differences. Some may reuire you to fit the lift-the-dot fasteners around the rear of the cockpit, and the press-studs around the drop-glass. Mine was a bit wrinkly, so I did reattach it to the the header rail to get it more taut. Lindsay Porter's instructions are pretty comprehensive. |

on my previous Spridget I bought a Don Hoods hood (vinyl of course for me) and had them fit it, they done a marvellous job on both, I hope to do the same with my present midget this spring http://www.donhoods.com/ |

I have a 'Don' hood, although bought from John Hill's MGB Centre in 1986. My brother also had Don Hoods fit a new hood on his TR6 and was suitably impressed. |

Thank you for your reply's, I have looked at the Don hoods website, and I was surprised at the cost of the Don hoods, for my B they are £90-00 cheaper than the ones made by Prestige,£270-00 from Prestige and only £180-00 from Don, the ones from Moss (inc header rail) are £424-00, am I missing something, I am more interested in quality and fit than price. Don't buy one with a header rail, the rails don't fit ... |

Go for the one that's easier to go back and beat them over the head with it if it doesn't fit. |

I bought a Don Hods for a Midget last year, it seems to be just fine although I am waiting for a hot day to fit it to the header rail. It is well made, symmetrical, and is just a shade bigger than the old hood which had shrunk and couldn't be closed any more. |

Bought this pack away from Moss (US) 20 years ago. Header rail attached and all fasteners. Just put it on and go. Pricey back then and still so today but I have no complaints with it.

Any chance you could post a close up view of the header rail from the side. Just so I can see how the vinyl fits. John |
