MG MGB Technical - pancakes

Dear All,
have got a nice old (unused) set of chrome pancake style airfilters for 1.5inch SU carbs as fittied on my mgbgt. there are no fittings with them. so i guess i will need to get shorter bolts - any suggestions as to where i can get these, or what the thread is such that i can just use suitable sized bolts? more importantly, as i have no instructions, how do i fit these - do they just bolt straight on to the carbs, if so, do i just use the standard gaskets i used with the original air filter boxes? do i miss out the plate that is on the standard boxes that interfaces with the carbs? its just that it doesnt seem to be as, shall we say, obvious as i previously thought....have heard of stubs stacks, but presume these are optional?
thanks for your time in advance, dont know what i would do without these pages (other than use the filters as attractive ashtrays!)

I don't have pancakes on mine yet but have been looking in to getting some, I think you need these.

Beware, if you bolt the pancake filters directly to the carbs your performance will suffer (mine was like it when I bought the car). You can solve the issue, as Steve says, using stub stacks or depending on the design of the pancakes by retaining the standard base plate with the curved air intake.

I have fitted K&N pancake filters to my MGB. All the
fittings of the standard filters are removed and only
the gaskets reused. You will have to buy 4 new nuts &
bolts to fit them. The length of the bolts will depend if you fit the the sub stacks suggested by Steve. Sub stacks are optional and can be fitted to improve the air flow giving a claimed 3bhp or so improvement. I dont have them fitted.
Also richer carburettor needles are sometimes recommended, but my car runs fine with the existing ones, though you may have to alter the carb mixture to suit the new filters. Worth buying suitable nuts & bolts and trying them out before going to this trouble!

K&N pancakes are OK, but make sure you haven't got a pair of the cheap ones as they perform the clever trick of strangling your engine whilst not filtering anything smaller than a brick.

Mick - The standard bolts used were 5/16 - 24 SAE bolts.
