MG MGB Technical - Panel thickness

Hello all,
I've not been on the board for a while, so long in fact that I had to re-register!
Anyway, I've got a bit of welding to do around the inner wing to bulkhead strengthener. Is the same gauge metal used throughout, or did they use different gauges depending where it is on the car?
As the front wings are scrap I was wondering if I can use some of that for my repairs.

I found this info on the MG experience website, which may help

Re: MGB Panel gauges.

Some panel gauges are mentioned in an introduction report from Autocar Sept 21, 1962 , on the then new mgb roadster.

The report states:
18 swg: inner wing panels,
16 swg: top hat section side members with centre flange.
No panel is thinner than 21 sgw.

During the 1970’s Pressed Steel took over the complete manufacturing as opposed to just the pressing of panels for the MGB body.

Did the panel gauges change?
There were rumours of panels being made thinner for the rubber bumper cars to help with emissions compliance in the US market.

FWIW Pressed Steel was bought by BMC in 1965 (or 66) and merged with Fisher Ludlow they already owned. GT bodies were always pressed and assembled at Pressed Steel at Cowley, roadster pressings from there were shipped to Coventry for assembly. In 1969 all bodies were pressed and assembled at Swindon, but shipped to Cowley for lead loading, paint and trim before being shipped to Abingdon for final assembly. Clausager et el.

OK, Thanks. The wings do seem fairly thick so might be 18 gauge as per the inner wing structure. I'll clean off some paint and underseal and get the verniers out.
