MG MGB Technical - pedals

In my 1971 MGB GT the accelerator pedal and the brake pedal are mounted quite close to each other, so when I intend to floor the brake (shoe size 10 by the way) I sometimes give full throttle as well. In some circumstances dangerous need not to say. I never had that problem in a 1968-roadster. Was there a change in the pedal mounting? Can the mounting easily be changed?

Hi Jan.

I find that even with my modest size 7 / 8 feet I can't safely drive my 1980 GT while wearing Doc Martins dealer boots.

Even with my modest size 12s, I can drive my 1979 B...:)

No problem for me driving my 1975 Jubilee whilst wearing my Dickies Steel Toe Cap protector boots....

size 11s, no probs

Have a feeling they did move the pedals to improve heel and toe - guess that might have meant moving them closer together!

They did alter the design of the accellerator pedal and the brake and clutch blanks were altered so that they would both be a common pressing but these pedals remained largely the same. My son's size 12s are OK on them

The change in the pedal spacing wasn't until quite near the end of production (1977 ?). On my '71 the brake and throttle are so far apart heel & toe action is quite impossible. (Tiny size 7 feet). I wonder if Jan's car has been modified.

I have no problem with the pedals in my 70 MGB, and I wear size 13 shoes, often with clodhopper boots on. The pedals in the B are closer than they are in my truck, but there's no problem operating the pedals independently if you position your feet properly. I'm guessing the either Jan's car has been modified for heel and toe driving, or he's just not used to it.

Heel and toe would probably be possible for me in my B, but I never learned how to do it.

Driving my '55 TF is a different story. The pedals on that car are so close, that I can only drive that car using a pair of thin moccasins that are used only for driving.

Learn to double clutch then hitting the brake and accelerator at the same time is a good thing :) My B was converted from LHD to RHD so the accelerator pedal is mounted on a couple of L brackets bolted to the firewall. I can move it around as I like to set it up how I want to. What is the standard spacing for a 78 B?

Jan, I have problems with my '71 as well. I have to wear my "driving shoes" when I drive the B so as not to have the same issue (size 11.)
I removed the pedal stop and adjusted the throttle cable to give WOT when the pedal hits the floor. The lower throttle pedal height gives more room for braking without hiting the gas.
Jeff Schlemmer

I had the same problem when my '71 B/GT was
new.

I removed the throttle pedal/arm, mounted it on a
bench vise, and bent it to give an additional 1/2"
clearance between the brake pedal.

It doesn't sound like much, but for me it made all
the difference.

I also did as Jeff did, and adjusted the pedal height
to be slightly lower.

Well, whatever shoe size... is it easy, if possible anyway, to install a pre 1977 brake pedal, which is not sloping to the right? (See Clausager page 93 or 94).

Jan:

I must be very careful when operating the brake pedal on my '71 GT. I can "heel & toe" quite easily with only the toe. (Size 11).

No problems with a size 11 and a 74.5 mgb roadster. (Wide foot too!). Ever try driving an Alfa Spider? I had to turn my foot sideways to fit into the space between brake, gas pedal and tranny tunnel. It took my shoe off when I had to do some hard braking. Those Italians must have some narrow feet.
