MG MGB Technical - Pertronix recalls LU-147

The following was posted on another MGB Forum by Jeff Schemmler of Advanced Distributors. FYI

If anyone here has a late model 45DM4 distributor with a pertronix ignition kit installed, the kits are being recalled. Apparently they installed the mounting plate upside down, so the phasing is way off. Your distributor will try to fire while the rotor is physically between cap terminals. This particular distributor is easily identified when you take off the distributor cap. The breaker plate has two long studs coming up through the Pertronix mounting plate, used to attach the plate. All other types of 45Ds only have a single screw holding the plate in place.

I'm not sure when the defect began, but it was certainly within the last 2 years. Let me know if I can be of any help with the issue. The retailer you purchased the kit from may not be aware of the problem, but Pertronix will handle warranties. You can reach them at 1-800-827-3758.

I've seen that exact symptom on a no-name Pertronix-like trigger. Because the spark can jump to either the leading or the trailing cap contact, or maybe not at all, the engine either runs incredibly badly or not at all so anyone with one should immediately realise it. The 'collateral damage' is that because it puts a much bigger gap in the HT circuit the HT voltage rises much higher than normal which can cause the rotor and other HT components to break down as well.

I installed a Pertronox ignitor system in my 45D when I installed my supercharger system. After less than a month, the cap had a hole burned right through to the out side 1/4" from the #1 terminal inside. This distriburor, from Moss, was new but had no country of origin marked on it. I assumed that it was the distributor at fault since it was clearly of poor quality and was dropped by Moss. I'm suprised that Pertronox did not try to inform its customers of this problem. RAY
