MG MGB Technical - petrol spraying out before fuel filter
Was going to go for a spin in the B today started it drove out garage and then popped bonnet to cheack oil. Fuel was spraying out of before the fuel filter so switched enegine of it keeped spraying for a bit. It there was loads of petrol dripping of the around the area as it had been a power ful spray. I supose i should renew the rubber pipe and put new clips on it. Should I renew the rubber on both sides or just the one that split. Also I was wondering is it normal to carry a fire extingisher as with the fuel spraying on manifold almost certian it would have gone at some point lucky was not last weeks trip as I never checked the oil dont know when this happened and how it did not catch. In regards to pipe will any bit of rubber pipe do or does it have to be "special" for this application and will normal clicks that you screw do the job or will i need OE type. |

Hi Jim. I would replace both sides and the filter. You must use 'proper' fuel pipe, some pipes go soft when exposed to petrol. My favourite hardware store keeps very neat miniature screw-type clips. A fire extinguisher is a good idea. Get one with a pressure gauge so that you can see if it has lost pressure, and make sure it is OK for petrol fires. Don't forget to fasten it down so that this heavy item can't fly around in the event of an accident. I seem to remember an interesting demo on TV a while ago.. they dripped petrol onto a hot manifold, it just sizzled away. They then dripped brake fluid onto the manifold, which immediately burst into flames. The suggestion was that some clip-in brake fluid reservoirs could detach in a collision and start a fire... can anyone else confirm this ?. Don |
