MG MGB Technical - PhantomGrip LSD

Has anyone (probably in the US) fitted a Phantom Grip LSD?

I heard about it from a friend who has one in his midget. Seems to work really well but interested if anyone has got one in a B?

TJ, I'm afraid I don't know of anyone with one of these, but I had a look at the home page and decided to be interested... a search turned up this very interesting page:

As far as I can tell it simply pre-loads the halfshaft gears against the casing using big springs, thus adding to the outward force that occurs when you put load on the axle. As you may know, you can cause an open diff to lock by simply applying lots of torque while everything is static, and this is how I do two-wheel burnouts in our hotrod - just jam the brakes on and nail the throttles and it breaks both away cleanly.

I think if you had one of these devices and used it a lot, you would find yourself changing the fibre washers behind the gears pretty often, but they're cheap. I shall ask my old man tomorrow about whether or not it would wear the gears excessively too.

Sounds like a nifty idea anyway, I think I might make a copy! I can't see it costing more than £100 or so in parts and fabrication costs, probably less if I can get my friendly local machinist interested :o)

A further point;

it also adds to the surface area used for friction as the gears have to turn against the metal block of the phantom grip unit. Seems like a pretty bad idea as there's no scrolls for oiling or oil-soaked friction material, it's just metal on metal. The gears are hard and the PG unit is mild steel so I'm sure the gears will wear less than the block, but that's still unsatisfactory.

I've just invented a far better one in my head :o)

I bounced this to the top 'cos I am keen to hear of any users experiences with the phantom....
