MG MGB Technical - Pilot bushing

The clutch is being replaced in the 1970 B. The carbon pad on the release bearing was worn completely down. Not so bad for 75K miles.

The pilot bushing that came out spun freely both in the crank pocket and on the transmission input shaft. The replacement (from Moss) spins freely on the input shaft but is very tight in the crank pocket. It will need to be frozen and hammered in (I had one on the midget go in this way a few weeks ago).

Since the previous pilot bushing is not particularly worn, would it be better to use that one again so that it can spin both in the crank and on the input shaft or should a new one be installed that will only spin on the input shaft?

If I recall both on the Midget and the B, the pilot bushing usually slides into the crank pocket easily and is available to spin against both surfaces.

Thanks!

Hi Glenn-
It's fairly common for them to come loose in the crank, but, no, don't refit it like that, it has to be a tight press in fit---and--just in case it hasn't been prelubed, it's a porous bush and needs to be soaked in oil overnight or pressure filled before fitting.

If you were stuck and couldn't get a new one you can fit the old one using loctite press fit repair, I've done that successfully in the past-
