MG MGB Technical - Piper camshaft
Gentlemen, I'm starting the rebuild of my '69 MGB engine. The engine has been bored out to 1860cc, crank, rods and pistons are balanced, head has been ported, flywheel lightened, Falcon SS exhaust with LCB manifold will be fitted, BUT i will keep the original HS4 SU's with K&N's hidden in the original housings. I have Lumenition Magnetronic ignition. Some time ago I was offered a Piper 285 camshaft kit for a rediculously low price...I couldn't resist. Will this cam be to "hot" for a daily driver? Any opinions valued. Rufus |

Should be ok, if a tad lumpy. Specs here: http://www.pipercams.co.uk/NewPiperWeb/redesign/NewFiles/Cams%20folder%20-%20new/2003CamCat_p4.PDF |

Define "some time ago" Piper changed the specs of their cams around a year back - the cam should come with a spec sheet or the specs printed on the box. The 285 is OK on the 1868 cc engine ( the bigger the capacity, the milder the cam seems to be) |

Rufus- Don't bother using the Piper 285 camshaft with the Original Equipment air filter housings. They are so restrictive that you will not be able to gain enough power at high engine speeds to compensate for the loss of torque at low engine speeds. You will need a pair of 6" diameter 3 1/4" Deep K&N airfilters in order to exploit the power potential od a Piper 285 camshaft. |

Chris: "some time ago" is actually over two years..the kit had been in someones stock for even longer (one of the instructions is marked june 1992). Paperwork that was with the camshaft is not very helpfull, the person doing the photocopying must have had a bad day because the left side of the page with tech. info is missing. The cam is stamped with "BP285" on the end. Steve: I was afraid of this. Suppose I will go for the K&N housings/covers, but will spray them wrinkle finish black. Chrome plated engine parts are for harleys and corvettes (IMO). Another thought: will my standard distributor give the right advance for the new max. revs? (6750 according to Piper) Thanks, Rufus |
