MG MGB Technical - Plastic bodied SU replacement
Does anyone have any experience with the plastic bodied SU fuel pump replacement? I have one, it seems to pump fine. But, when the engine is stopped, the fuel flows back to the tank. This did not happen with my old SU pump. |

The pump shouldn't do that. It sounds like the check valves are bad. The plastic SU clones are mad in New Zealand and sold under the name MoProd. they are generally a good pump, having a solid state trigger system so there are no points to go bad. The problem is the plastic body has a nasty habit of developing cracks around the inlet and outlet ports or the glued joints develop leaks. Thee are no repair parts available fro the pumps, so if the go bad, they go into the trash bin. Cheers - Dave |

My V8 came with a MoProd. It was OK for a while, then would start 'short-stroking' and causing fuel starvation. Even though I was able to catch this happening and investigate the electrical end of the pump (in the boot) I could get nowhere with stopping it. As the car was my daily driver I couldn't live with a pump I couldn't rely on, so swapped it for a refurbished points-type pump I had and I've had no further problems since. Because of that I'd never have another solid state pump, I'd rather have one that I could thump and tickle-up the points, given the infrequency of problems with these pumps. |

Had one on a midget once, threw it away, kept giving up! Get a pointless SU! |

Thanks for the feedback. I guess I'll replace it with a new SU. Too bad, its light and compact and seemed like a good alternative. Mike |

Ditto problems with Mo-Prod pump. Although some people (me included ) have had problems with the little square Facet pump, the competition pumps work pretty well - reliable (in rally cars...), quiet and powerful. Neil |
