MG MGB Technical - powdercoating manifold

Has anyone had good luck powdercoating a exhaust manifold? I have a Austin Marina manifold on my '79 B and the "hi temp paint" isn't worth a c**p!I have a chance to get it done from one of my customers who owns a powdercoat plant and want to know if it is worth it
Thanks Pat in Tehachapi

Eastwoodco makes a silicon based powder good up to about 1200. Regular powder is not heat resistant enough.

Patric - You might want to consider the Jet-Hot coating for your manifold. I have not used it on my manifold, but I see reports from numerous people who are well satisfied with it. The web site for Jet-Hot is;

Patrick:
I've had great success using ceramic coatings and other products from Tech Line Coatings. They supply many commercial and industrial companies but sell retail as well.
I've done headers myself as well as many engine parts with ceramic coatings and dry film lubricant. I plan to do a new complete exhaust system before next summer. Blasting with fine aluminum oxide, a thorough wash, spraying of the water based coating and baking in an oven is all that is required.

Believe it or not, a coat of zinc-rich paint (cold galvanizing) applied to a freshly bead blasted iron manifold looks great and holds up to the heat just fine. A couple of guys in our club came up with the idea and it results in a nice grey color. Cheap, too.

Patrick. The do it your self ceramic coating from Tec Line works great. It not only looks good. It reduces the under hood temp.I have used it on my MGA manifold, and B v6 headers.I plan to coat the hole exhaust system of my v6 next spring. Bob

Have any of you had your ceramic coatings, or other coatings, applied for more than a year? I'm wondering what the durability is like. I know even the best high temp paints have rust-through problems within a year, despite a freshly sandblasted surface. Is there any product that has been proven to truly LAST?

Jeff- I've had great low cost/low tech luck with the spray ceramic coat. 2 light coats, then cure bake for a couple hours. Did 2 stock CI MGB exh. manifolds, over a year ago in the flat black. After much use and abuse, both look perfect, new, unblemished. As to heat containment, I can not comment. My laser thermometer, shows they average surface temp between 540-600 degrees though.I'd be curious to see long range report on Dave's cold galv coat approach above too. That's gotta be the ez-iest if it works in the longterm, and could be done in sitio.

I've used the Eastwood brand brush, or spray on manifold coatings (can get in a few colors like cast iron or aluminium) and they hold up great.

Jeff-
After three years of service my Jet-Hot coated exhaust manifold looks the same as the day that I installed it.

Jeff, I had my Datsun header Jet Hotted about 14 years ago and although a little rust did develope on the flange it held up fine. I sent it back to them ast year when I pulled the motor and for 25 they redid it.

I have used the high temp coatings in the past. The secret is in the prep. Basolutely bare bright metal. Blasted even better.

Jaguar manifolds were vitreous enamelled. Lasts really well. Same finish used on domestic cookers. Dont confuse with stove enamelling which wont do.

I decided to Jet-Hot my manifold when I supercharged the TD. Like Steve S., I can say it still looks as good as the day I installed. Well worth every darn cent.

I used RUST-OLEUM HIGH HEAT FLAT ENAMEL (BAR-B-Q BLACK #S7778) paint that you can get at Lowes for painting outside cooking grills, its been on for several years and still looks great, STOPS RUST and has a nice matte finish. However, if you have the money, Jet-Hot is the way to go. I will start a new project this fall and like Craig, I will Jet-Hot the manifold to keep the area around the SUPERCHARGER cooler. Call them and they will send you all of the information along with a VHS tape.

I used Aluminum High Temp Paint on my manifold after it was sandblasted. It's lasted years and still looks great!
