MG MGB Technical - Purolator oil filter questions

I have used Purolator L14670 filters on my 3 main MGB engine, converted to inverted spin-on filter, and have been very happy with them. But now my local dealer canīt get them any more, and offers a Purolator L17200 as a replacement.

This filter has the same shape and size as the L14670, but the underside and inside look completely different with smaller holes, the relief valve is different, the general feel and finish is not very satisfying, and there is no country of origin on the filter or the package.

You will have guessed that I donīt really trust this filter. What has happened to Purolator, and has anyone actually tried the L17200?

I also wonder if anyone knows who makes the GFE121 filters sold by Moss.

Tore,

Give this link a try, they still have the L14670 listed available here in the states?

I get Volvo/Mann for mine, I find they give oil pressure quicker than others, in some cases much quicker, and are consistent between changes. K&N Gold was about the same - except in price being about 50% dearer.

I have used Volvo filters before, and they have been excellent, but they are quite a bit smaller than other filters commonly used for the MGB. I found that the Purolator worked just as well, and preferred it because it is bigger. But I guess I will now start using Volvo filters again.

That's true, I didn't notice the first time I used one, but did last time and asked if they had changed but they hadn't.
Paul Hunt

Generally, I prefer bigger filters. But, if you are talking more length rather than diameter, I don't think the extra length is a good idea on an inverted installation. The filter base has a stand pipe in it, and I think the filter will drain down to that point. So, if the filter is longer, it will end up with greater empty space on shut down.

I also use the Mann filters for Volvo (W 917), but I get them from a parts house rather than from Volvo. In a 10-pack, they are about $4 US each.

It may be imagination, but I believe that after the same mileage on the same kind of 20w50 oil, pressure is just a little bit higher with the Purolator than with the Volvo filter. I have excellent oil pressure anyway, so it is not a problem. But I just wonder - could this have something to do with the size of the filter, or the density of the filter media?

I'd say a high density filter media would reduce flow, but whether it would increase pressure with the same relief valve is another matter. Media for media a longer filter would be better than a shorter one as it would offer less resistance to flow, but you have to balance that against the longer 'refill' time of the space above the end of the tube in the longer filter. Pressure takes longer to build after standing a week than standing overnight (almost) regardless of filter, but how much of that is down to the level dropping to the top of the tube, or dropping out of the filter as a whole, I don't know.

hi tore,
i guess you were not informed correctly..

Interesting. Looks as if I will just have to try harder.

The Volvo oil filter in question is Volvo part# 3517857 which is manufactured for Volvo OEM spec by Mann. The 3517857 oil filter was used in the Volvo cars from approximately 1961-1999 non turbo I am sure there are many x-references for that item. For a while in the 1970-80's Wix manufacturing supplied them for the OEM application. The spec was to filter to 4 microns.
