MG MGB Technical - Push rod-brake mstr cylinder
Restoring a 72 bgt. The hole for the clevis pin in the brake master cylinder pushrod is really ovalized. Can't seem to locate a replacement push rod. Anyone know of a clean way to repair this hole and make it circular? Thanks, Tom |

Tom. You should be able to get a good, used part from Bob Schaulin at gbmg@aol.com or you can fix your old one. To fix the old one, have it welded up where it is worn and re-drill it. Any good welding/fabrication/gunsmithing shop should be able to re-manufacture it for you. Les |

I had the same problem but was able to buy a brand new part for not very much money. I can't recall whether it came from MGOC or Moss, but it was a stock part. |

Miles. I checked the Moss (US) catalog before posting my response. They show the part as not available. Thus, if you are an MGOC member and could check to see if they have the part available, we would all benefit. Thanks, Les |

Tom, I had this problem. Provided you have access to the tools welding it up and redrilling the hole is very easy. Almost as quick as getting you credit card out of your pocket and lifting the phone. David |

I bought one from Moss about 2 years ago, still have it somewhere. Let me have a look, and I'll get back to you. |

I had ovalling in both the push-rod and the pedal, but on the clutch not the brake. I happened to have a scrap clutch MC with a good push-rod, but welded up and filed out the pedal hole, could imagine doing this with the push-rod at a pinch but it would need more care. With the pedal I welded it up and filed it out a bit at a time, keeping the unworn side of the hole as a reference point, rather than completely filling with weld then having to redrill accurately. |

Tom, Is this the part you are looking for, Piece #27, part #181-690? http://www.mossmotors.com/Shop/ViewProducts.aspx?PlateIndexID=29011 I called Moss, it is in stock and retails for $14.95. You might be able to get it for less from Jeff Zorn at http://www.lbcarco.com. |

Uh-oh, that's clutch, not brake. Sorry. |

Paul, The pushrod is the same for both clutch and single line brake master cylinders - it's part number 17H7985. Les, I checked on the current MGOC parts list and it is available for £7.75 or £6.95 for members. But now I have my records to hand I can see that I bought mine from a local specialist who got his parts from Moss Europe - it's in their list too for £7.50 (although my copy of their list might not be up to date). Tom, Although I replaced my pushrod I ended up changing the cylinder a year later. So I still have an almost new pushrod in the garage. If you can't get one in the US then let me know and I'll send it over. Miles. |

Thank you gentlemen for your advice!! Miles, I may take you up on your offer if I can't find one here or get mine repaired. One of these days I'm also going to take a welding class!! Les, what is Bob Schaulin's speciality? Does he rebuild hydraulic cylinders? Regards, Tom |
Tom Custer |
Tom. Bob is a general mechanic who can, and does, rebuild hydraulic cylinders. However, he does not have a machine shop. So, if a master cylinder has a badly pitted bore, it would have to be rebuilt by a specialty shop such as Apple Hydraulics or White Post Restorations. They have to tooling to do this type of work. Bob and his brother, Gil, taught me how to rebuild calipers many years ago and they can provide this type of service. For wheel cylinders, I replace them rather than rebuild them. They are inexpensive and I have seen to many rebuilt wheel cylinders fail, both those I did and those I had professionally done, to trust them. So, it depends on exactly what needs to be done. You can e-mail him and find out if he can do what you need done. Les |
