MG MGB Technical - Re-fitting door glass

Having removed the door glass I now have the problem of re-fitting it. I have tried to do it with the lifting mechanism in place but cannot get the glass and its rubber to fit snugly into the bottom channel, it does not go completely in. After a few operations of the window up and down it all comes loose and the window sticks up before dropping of its own accord. Does anyone have any tips on how to get the glass and its rubber seal to go completely into the bottom lifting channel.

Sorry Michael, don't understand what 'the OTHER board' is.

Graham

Michael means the MG Owners club forum, it will be under the same heading 'MGB Technical'.

If Graham isn't a member of the MGOC, he won't get access to the OTHER board. This question has been discussed over there very recently. My opinion, after restoring 2 MGBs and a midget is that you simply can't change the glass with the mechanism still in the door. I'm actually astonished you got the old glass out. I had to hammer the channel off the old glass after it had been there for 30+ years.

The glass is simply held in the channel by friction between it, the rubber and the channel. To make it hold, I had to rig up a press using my Workmate bench and force the glass into the channel. What rubber are you using? My supplier gave me a flat piece of rubber that I was meant to fold into a U-shape, but it was totally inadequate being too thin. I ended up re-using the old shaped rubbers and they hold the glass well, but did have to be forced on.

Thanks folks. I have looked at the OTHER board, am a MGOC member, and mailed Tim for a chat. Will now experiment.

Fit channel and rubber to glass - yes it is a struggle. Fiddle regulator into cavity. Lower glass with channel into door. Locate regulator runners in the slots in the channel. Secure regulator to door panel.

I posted a how to some time ago. This was after about 12 hours of fiddling around trying different sequnces. I think I called it "refitting window glass"
