MG MGB Technical - Rear Anti Roll Bar

Hi,

I have a 1977 MGB GT, at some time in it's previous ownership, someone have remoed the rear anti roll bar. I have perchased another rear anti roll bar as the car has a 7/8 anti roll bar on the front and understeers like a plow!

I am also going to be lowering the car and changing the bushes for poly bushes all round.

I read somewhere that if you lower the car you should remove the rear anti roll bar?

What is the reason for this and has anyone lowered their car and kept the rear anti roll bar?

Thanks

Jules

I would expect you to always need the rear ARB if you stick with that 7/8" beam across the front. It appears that a stock chrome bumper ride height MGB oversteers, discuessed befroe and its all in the archives, and most people like a 3/4 front ARB and no rear one.

I have an 80 LE and recently did all the upgrades you mentioned and more including new leafs with the lowering kit. The anti-roll bar is still in place and now uses poly bushes. I had to adjust the length of the anti roll bar when reinstalling which is simply done by screwing the ends in or out to meet up properly. Otherwise, it was quite straightforward.

Rick,

After you completed all that does yours understeer?

Jules-
I have a Chrome Bumper mgb roadster with a 7/8" front stabilizer bar balanced by a trailing rear stabilizer bar from a 1978 MGB Roadster, plus uprated front dampers and a Pahhard rod to control rear axle sway. It handles very well on winding mountain roads. Just be sure to put performance tires on the car or you find the rear end to be a bit twitchy.
