MG MGB Technical - Rear brake hose reassembly
I've just had to resort to an angle grinder to get this apart and can't tell from the debris if there is meant to be a washer between the locking nut and bracket/plate where it fixes to the rigid pipe from the front of the car. Can anyone remember? Many thanks |

There wasn't a washer on mine when I took it apart a few days ago, and it hadn't come loose - whether there's meant to be one there is another matter! hth, -- Olly |

Steve. There should be a star washer there. But, like Olly, I have seen a number of these without any washer and all seemed to work fine. Les |

Thanks guys. I thought I'd do the right thing and replace the rear hose along with the front hoses but from the trouble it's given me I reckon I'm the only person to have done so since the car left Abingdon. |

Steve: most drivers that I look under have the original hose, I mention that as a lead for another story. while bleeding the brakes after replacing a leaking wheel cylinder my helper pumped up the brakes as I bled them and all of a sudden the hose burst only unusual because it happened while I watched. Maybe this little tale will make more then one of us look under our cars at that little hose that is often forgoten. Ric |

Now I feel good! |

Well I did until I found the new hose is 2" short. Hmmm. |

The hoses are different lengths between rubber and chrome bumper cars - the bracket on the axles are in different places. Maybe either your hose or your axle isn't what you thought it was? hth, -- Olly |

Cheers Olly. Unfortunately MGOC reckoned their stock are all about the same size so are sending a front hose to use. How's your Vitesse/MGB chimera coming on? |
Steve Postins |
Ah, I could be remembering that wrong - the bracket on the axle definitely moved so maybe the bracket on the car also moved and they kept the same hose. Does your axle have anti-roll bar mounts where you wouldn't expect them? The MGB GTS is currently on axle stands, all that torque saw off the pinion bearings while launching onto a roundabout! Axle is rebuilt though and back under the car, just has no halfshafts in it, which may change this evening. ttfn, -- Olly |
