MG MGB Technical - Rear shocks

1971 BGT still rides 'nose up' after fitting new leaf springs.Would fitting rear shocks help? Which kit is best? New to bbs,all replies appreciated.Cheers and thanks.
Dave Gale

I assume you already have rear lever shocks. Are you saying the rear is still too low? Changing shocks will not change the height.

Dale, what is the dimension between the lower edge of the stainless waistrail to the centre of the wheel at all four corners. That will help us to point to the problem area. Clifton is correct in that shocks make absulutely no difference to the riding height.

"Changing shocks will not change the height"

Unless they are seized or binding.

Well, a gas-charged shock kit does make a *tiny* difference, since it pushes instead of merely damping. If he has a conversion kit with overly-excited gas shocks on it, that might life up the derrier a bit.

Hello,

I made that conversion to gas-shock. with a kit I made myself and it does not change ride height. The improvement on handling was great.
Nose up means rear low and problem could be at spring level.

It's a fair assumption yes but until Dave gives us the heights we are guessing. My C/B cars sit just about right at 14" rear and 14 1/2" front.

Jean,
While we're on the topic, which shocks are you using? I've been driving with the Moss conversion kit for the last 2 years and I finally decided to change back because the ride quality is just that bad. I'm not using the stock van shocks, btw, but the Dodge Colt shocks with the bottom mount reamed out to the correct size. I am considering trying the Monroe 5893 before I give up entirely.

Hi,

As it is a kit I made myself and for that purpose I used Volvo 142 front shock. I removed shock bottom transversal fixation and used GM shock bolt. For upper part it is bayonet type and the frame upper attachment I made needed only a hole of proper size.

Your idea of shock 5893 with a travelling distance 9.375"@ 14.250" is good as van shock are to stiff for that application and a 5893 will more in same weight barcket of a MG.

Cheers,

JGC
