MG MGB Technical - Rear spring bushing
Working up the nerve to replace the rear suspension bushings on our '70B after great sucess doing the front overhaul with SuperFlex components. I have the rear fittings ready to go but see there the front mount bushing are one piece with flanges (edges, skirts, wings?) on each end of the bushing. I would have expected 2-piece units that would slip into each side of the spring. The numbers match SuperFlex information as correct for this applicaton but I don't want to get into pulling things apart if I'm heading the wrong way. Are these correct &, if so, how do I get them in? Thanks all, Joe |

Joe, I did this about a year ago on my '73 with the Superflex bushings. Those bushings are the correct ones. They need to be installed with a press. Zach |

Joe, you will probably get them in with a vice. Now getting the old ones out............!!!!!! Best way is to burn out the rubber and then cut the steel sleeve with a hacksaw!! Colin |

That's why replacement springs come with these already in! |

I used a hammer and small chisel to punch down the 'top' of the metal sleeve towards the centre, which pulled the rubber away from the speing eye, front and rear and they came out easily enough in the vice. Just stick your new ones in the freezer for 10 minutes before fitting? Mine went in no problems. Liam |

Thanks much, guys. Looks like I have the right bushings and am in for a bit of work. Scheduled for a 25C day so freezer bushings will help keep us cool. I'll let you know how things turn out. Joe |

Success! Had to saw off only one bolt to get both springs out. The big hammer & equally big punch took care of the bug bushings. Hacksaw took out the metal sleeves. Small bushings slipped right in and the big fellas needed the vice. Best tip was the deep freeze - I think room temperature would have caused no end of grief on the large bushings but a bit of frigid stiffening and the big guys were quite happy to go just where they were supposed to go. Replaced the destroyed bolt with a grade 8 off the shelf (still don't know why it was there!) and the little red beauty was happily prancing just like it came out of the showroom. Can't believe the difference new suspension bushings make! Too much like rain to get in a good "scoot" but some good weather will give us the chance to really try out this new car feel. The only downside was finding my next project - a weeping rear shock - but then a perfect car would be a real bore, wouldn't it? Thanks again for the great advice all - Joe |
