MG MGB Technical - Rear wings

Ive sorted fuel pump as on other thread that I posted and I went for a drive round today. I really do like driving this car, it seems a lot more refined and grown up than I remember my 1275cc midget being, although it does seem a lot less "chuckable" through the corners.

Anyway, to the point, Ive had the car just over a week and had a good look around it this weekend while I was under it doing the pump.

The floor and sills are very good, Ive got a box full of history with the car and they were replaced 4 years ago, but the rear wings/arches are full of filler and one is well mis-shapen, how hard is it to replace these? or what would I expect to pay for both rear lower half wings to be replaced?

Also the area at the bottom of windscreen frame also looks full of rot/filler, is this tricky to sort, (the glass is coming out soon as the screen is cracked)

I dont mind mechanical repairs or bolt on stuff or electrical work, but my welding is awful.

Cheers

Complete rear wings are expensive, same as front (>£200) Lower half wings are cheaper at £50 each approx and are fitted from the waist line down, assuming thatthe wing tops haven't started bubbling?
I had a local body shop do my lower half wings along with n/s sill and it wasn't an exceptionally difficult job, but, you may find more than you care to when removing the wings. The inner arches may need patching/replacing.

The Steelcraft panels I had were not the best in alignment terms, but it wasn't difficult to sort out. The old wings were cut off leaving a 1/2" edge, and the new wings trimmed and fitted up. The old wing edges were joggled and 5mm holes were punched all round on the new wing and the new wing held with clamps while the welding was done. The whole waistline, taillight and door frame were then lead loaded, followed by a skim fill to tidy up.

As to A-posts, as long as the inner part is not rusty behind the interior trim piece, and there are not too many holes on the outside, I have just rust treated the suirface and skim filled. However, for more complex treatment, it's windscreen out.
Hope that helps.

I haven't got any experience concerning the scuttle under the windscreen but we have replaced both the lower rear wings on my car.

We got the panels from www.mgbhive.co.uk at about 50 quid each and were a good fit!

We placed the new panel up against the car and marked where we needed to cut. The, using an angle grinder just took it off.

It was hard work as the steel is thick stuff but we got it off!

Then we realised that the wheelarches themself were very rotten so had to completely rebuild them first (common problem!!!)

To fix on the panel we tack welded it every couple of inches, ground the welds flat and filled to make a clean joint.

The panels fitted really well and the service from MGBHive is awesome. Give them a call on 01945 700 500, for a catalogue.

Good luck!!
