MG MGB Technical - Recon' or new rear shocks
Hi, I'm about to replace badly leaking rear shocks on my 77' roadster, simple question really, are £18 or so reconditioned shocks generally Ok, or is it a lottery? Any recommended UK suppliers. Reading the archive I'm seeing all sorts of stories. Keeping the car original. Thanks Mike. |

It can be a bit of a lottery as to how good recons are. If it was me, I would have my own shocks rebuilt by a specialist, such as Stevson Motors in Birmingham. It all depends on how quickly you need them. |

I replaced the rears on my roadster about ten years ago with recon 25% uprated shocks from MGB Hive and they have been fine. I'd go ahead and purchase recons if I were you they are certainly cheap enough and won't break the bank if they do go belly up. |

It *is* a bit of a lottery, as the recon is only as good as the old core. But I've only had one fail in a year on two cars in 20 plus years. |

Thanks for the quick replies, yip, you confirmed my thinking, reconditioned shocks are cheap enough too risk. The cars not regular transport so I can play around. Will probably try MGBhive, used them before. Mike. |
