MG MGB Technical - Refitting K&Ns - what's the secret?
OK, there's nothing on this in the archives so I must be missing a trick: when I try to offer up the large single type K&N filter to my SUs I find I'm trying to keep hold of four bolts, two spacer tubes, two gaskets, two base plates and the filters themselves. Even employing every digit and my teeth, one lot ends up on the floor and the other behind the exhaust manifold. I'm beginning to dread the job. Please tell me there's an ingenious easy way to fit them. Thanks, Steve |

Steve, I bought four 5/16" ID rubber O-rings which were placed on the long bolts under the washers. They do a very good job of holding the washers on to the bolts. The rest of it IS very fiddly. I placed the large alloy cover on the ground with the four bolts sticking up through it, and then placed everything in order stacked on it. By spreading out my fingers, I was then able to offer up the whole assembly to the carbs, sliding the bolts into the mounting flange holes. The holes in the carb mounting flange will loosely hold the assembly in place while you CAREFULLY place the threaded mounting brackets behind the carbs, starting with the rear carb first. Pull the bolt heads back one at a time just enough to get the threads started. Repeat with the front carb/choke mounting bracket. Once all four bolts have been started in the mounting brackets, you should be able to align the stack and tighten up the bolts. Once on, the car may run a bit leaner, so you might have to change needles to ABD or possibly AAA, depending on what other mods, if any, have been done. Cheers, Paul |

You could fit Heli-coils in the carb flanges, to do away with nuts and washers. Then you wouldn't have to hold the air filter assemblies together with one hand, while you try to mate up nuts and bolts with your other two hands. Of course, you then might have to find an alternative location to mount your choke cable. There seems to be a domino effect of changes when we alter our Bs in any way. ~Jerry |

I have the MGB plaque/end-plate that the two seperate filters bolt through. I put everything together, rest on rad surround, feed my hand through the bonnet strut gap, whilst using my other hand to steady the assembly on the surround so it doesn't pee all over the floor! Then offer up to carbs and laying one arm under the filters to support the assembly push home all four bolts. This done you can then attack each fixing plate and tighten up after. you will of course get a red arm from the oil, if like me, you have just spent the weekend re-oiling the things! HTH ~PHIL |

One trick I have used, but not in this case, for such fiddly bits is to hold it all together with a thick grease - like axle grease. Yes, it is messy, and no, it will not really affect the way the setup works. Mostly you will probably have to mop up with a solvent damp rag or paper towels after its all together. |
