MG MGB Technical - Reluctant to rev
I know that the B series is not reknowned for its free-revvingness, but I don't recall my original B in the 70s being as grumpy as this one. This (1973 GT, UK spec) was rebuilt by the PO 3000 miles ago with new shells, rings and UL head, a "mild road" cam (no details)standard SUs to which I have added K&Ns; setting the timing by the "best performance before it pinks" method there is a clear improvement in willingness with advancement, but bringing it back to a "just about to pink" setting, even with superunleaded and octane booster, makes it OK to about 3000 but unhappy above. The distributor appears to be OK. Is this typical and my rose tinted memory playing tricks? or will it be better when the engine's done a few more miles? or should I suspect the distributor anyway? many thanks |

Take it on a rolling road to set it up and measure the bhp. Could be the choice of cam or premature wear on the cam through bad running in. Pulling out the cam followers may give an indication of cam problems if they are badly pitted or dished. The engine should be run in enough after 1000 miles let alone 3000. |

You might find the PO has the valve timing wrong. I bought a cam from MOSS and if I remember correctly it was to be installed with about 5 degrees of advanced. |
