MG MGB Technical - Replacing dash bulbs
I didn’t find how to replace dash bulbs in the archives. I have a 1974 mgb roadster and am wanting to know how to replace the dash bulbs. Thanks George |

Mostly the holder just pulls out of the back of the instruments and the bulb unscrews from the holder. It's a matter of reaching up behind the dash and feeling around, Google the instruments first to see pictures of the backs if you don't know what you are feeling for. Assuming a USA spec you may have an under-dash panel to remove first, I believe. |

I did this in the fall. Paul is correct. The bulb holder pull out of the back of the gauges and then the bulb unscrews. I was unable to get at the bulb for the speedo. Just too much stuff in the way. You may need to find a volunteer with skinny hands for that one! I replaced mine with LEDs. Big difference in brightness. Good luck! |

Indeed, LEDs make a huge difference to the gauges, as in the attached. These are bright white LEDs which is why it's a bit blue in the picture, from the paint inside the cans. I didn't intend it to be like that, just hadn't realised the difference between bright white LED and 'yellowish' incandescent. If you don't like the blue then warm white gives a closer colour to the original.
Google 'E10 5 5050 SMD LED' for a direct replacement for the screw in type. The only thing you have to watch is that they are longer than the original incandescents, I had to space it back a bit in one of my speedos, and I've heard of someone having to do the same with a dual gauge. |
