MG MGB Technical - Replacing throttle shafts
I would like to replace the throttle butterfly shafts with the oversize ones but Moss charges over £160 for a reamer to do the carb. body. Are these available somewhere else at a more reasonable price or has anyone got one they would hire to me. Thanks Trev |

Hi Trevor, I rebuilt a HS2 with bushes supplied in a rebuild kit. see here http://www.mgb-stuff.org.uk/recosu.htm The kit for twin HS4s, was something like $104 Aus. The rebuild carb works great. Herb |

Are you certain you need oversized shafts/new bushes? I've often found that when I slip the shaft left or right so that an unworn bit of the shaft is in the bush there is often little play -- meaning in that case new standard shafts and you're done! |

If you do find (by Rob Edwards method) that you still need over sized shafts, check around locally for a machinist who will line bore the shaft bores. You can probably get it done much cheaper than purchasing a special reamer. Cheers - Dave |

Trevor, Having just done this operation (inserted bushes) on a set of H4's from a TR2, on a lathe it needs a lot of effort to set up accurately - Burlen recommend that you bore from both sides - not through. Just found out via the midget BBS board that our friends from across the pond have a clever reamer with 5/16" shaft pilot and a larger cutter size to suit bushings supplied. Found one on Evil bay @ £36ish + about £14 postage - still expensive but much easier to do. Simply ream on side (piloted on one side old bearing) - fit bush and reamer the other. R. |
