MG MGB Technical - Restrictor pipe on rocker cover?
I was painting my rocker cover today and looked more closely at the 90 degree pipe that comes from it. I always assumed this was sealed on the rounded end but it has a small hole there. My car has been desmogged. I think this used to go to some special cannister (long gone). Where should it go now? Should it be blocked off? Or am I supposed to connect a hose from there to somewhere? Simon. It goes to the large connection on the charcoal cannister. The charcoal cannister, on the late model cars, also serves as the vent for the fuel tank. Thus, when "desmogging" the car, leaving the charcoal cannister in place, and hooked up, is an excellent idea. It takes no power away from the engine and serves a useful purpose. Les |

This is the source of make-up air for the PCV system. As Les says it was originally connected to the charcoal cannister, which provided some filtering. If yours is missing I would either plug it and use a vented oil filler cap, or connect it to a small air filter. I have used a large fuel filter for this purpose. I like the see through type, as you can check the condition of the filter media. |

I doubt very much charcoal cannisters are available down here! I need a new oil cap so I'll see if they are vented or not then figure out what to do. Ah, this probably explains why there is a second steel fuel line running from the back of the car (which wasn't connected to the tank although the tank does have a small pipe hanging off it). Simon |
