MG MGB Technical - Roadster Windscreen replacement

Hi All,

Just had my windscreen broken on my B Roadster by a big rock :-(

So I phoned up the insurance company, who put me onto the Windscreen people etc.

I popped in there before work to find out what's involved in getting them to change it. The guy there (who was the manager) seemed to think that it would involve taking the whole frame off the car and doing the job on the bench. Doesn't that mean the front wings have to come off as well? Is this right? It looks to me as though you might be able to take the top rail off the frame and "just slot a new screen in"

I'm not too keen on letting people who don't have a lot of experience with the car pulling it to bits to put a new screen in if it's not absolutely necessary!

Any comments appreciated.

Regards... Phil.

I am afraid thats right Phil. The whole screen has to come out. The side pillars are held in by two bolts on either side with packing pieces. The screen then comes out and is unscrewed and taken apart leaving you with two side pillars and a top and bottom section - I think. You may need new rubbers and plenty of silicon and as the man says it will need to be done on a bench. Not a job for the faint hearted - check that whoever does it has the experience before you have it done.

... and just to complete the question - the screen has to come out to replace the wings, but not the other way round.

Thanks Paul - I forgot that point.

The bolts on the two sides are not easy to get at to get out, and not easy to get in again either. If someone else is paying for this, do leave this job to an expert.
Daryl

Agree with Darryl, If you can get someone else to do it do so. It is a job you can do your self, but you won't enjoy your self at all.
Make sure the guy that does it has done them before.
He should know that there are two packing pieces per side, a thick plastic one and a thinner "glove box material" one. Be nice to him though, nobody really wants to do these, it took me hours.

I would try to get the insurance company to agree to you taking it to an mg specialist in your area. This is a pig of a job and some of the monkeys employed by the chain outfits are almost certain to cock it up. For a start, the 4 bolts that hold the screen on are almost inaccessible with the dashboard in place, but an expert can do it. Then the screen frame screws are almost always rusted solid. Then the new rubbers seem far too big (but aren't). And finally, getting a new bottom seal on and postioned is worth a book in itself. And don't be tempted to use the old seals - they are bound to leak afterwards.

Mike (who did it with much swearing and able assistance from dearest wife).
