MG MGB Technical - Rubber abd Chrome Differences?

Hello All,

This is a short question and I'm hoping it has a short answer!

I have a bare rolling CB shell, but also a complete 1978 RB car which I hope to use as a donor for the good shell as much as possible.

Engine/engine bay, braking, steering, dash, and front and rear wings aside, are the two identical? what parts can't I re-use?

Could I re-use the petrol tank for instance, seat runners, window winder mechanisms, lights, door and window glass+chrome, whole doors and tailgates!?

They look very similar but I doubt that is the case!

It all depends on what year your CB shell is. Get a Moss or VB catalog and check each part in question. If they are different they will have different part numbers. It they are the same the catalog will tell you so. Moss (USA) catalog is on line at www.mossmotors.com, although I find having hard copies more convenient to use.

Whole doors are interchangable, but inner parts may or may not be, depending on year.

Petrol tanks are all the same external dimensions, but later are "sealed" for emissions control.

All the parts you ask about can be reused although the fuel tanks could be a little different. What year is the CB car? The bigger the difference in age the more differences there are.

Differences are the RB had a different front crossmember and therefore a different steering rack. They also have different mounting points for the rear springs which raise the car. The bump stop position is also moved. Bodywork wise apart from the obvious bumper mounts there are bits missing under the tail lights at the back, the front wings are different as you note and there are mounting points for the rear anti roll bar (on a 78 at least). Also there will only be one battery box on the 78 whereas the CB might have two. The engine mounts might be different too. The early cars had rectangular mounts while the later ones use round ones. I think the exhaust is a little different on a RB and so are the rebound straps and the rear shock links.

Those are what I can think off of the top of my head. Others will add more!
