It should be no problem at all to do so. The engine can be easily raised using either a hoist or a jack under the engine oil pan positioned nearest to the front crossmember. Use a block of wood between the top of the jack and the oil pan to avoid denting or puncturing the oil pan. Only a few centimeters or fractions of an inch are required to provide enough clearance to slide the old mounts out and the new ones into place. Thus, you shouldn't have to remove radiator hoses or disconnect the exhaust header pipe to move it enough to get the job done, but watch the radiator hoses flex as you raise it in the event that one is brittle. There are 2 different types of engine mounts for MGBs. Square ones were used until about 1974 and rounded ones were used after 1974 or thereabouts. Your parts supplier should be able to supply the correct ones, but a visual check is easy to do. Also, the location of the grounding strap changed about 1974. You should have a grounding strap that carries the starter's negative current from the engine block to the chassis bridged around the left side of the engine motor mount. Make sure you securely get it back in place. On later models, the grounding strap was attached to the transmission. |

Thank You Rick For that information, that will save me a bit of work I envisaged haveing to strip things off the engine before lifting it. Johnny Cook. |
