MG MGB Technical - Running wiring rear harness on the inside
Has anyone on here don this? I am replacing the complete harness in my 67 GT and have been thinking about running the rear part inside the car instead of underneath. Is this smart/feasable? If so were did you enter the rear part of the loom into the cockpit? Where did you let the loom exit at the rear? All comments welcome! |

I've seen the harness run down the floorboard along the transmission tunnel on the right side, then enter to the outside via a small hole (w/grommet) drilled into the read bulkhead alongside the battery boxes. I've also seen conduit run inside the sills (during a restoration) so that the harness can run inside the sill (yet be pulled with ease if the need arises). Many rallyers also run the speedo cable and brake lines inside the cockpit. rick |

I have my wiring run inside the cockpit along the right side rocker. Its basically an autocross car, so there's no carpet. The wiring is inside black split-flex-loom. It enters the firewall through a grommet and goes into the boot in an existing hole above the inner fender. It was previously caulked with seam sealer, but the sandblasting opened it up. I just never sealed it back shut. |

Jeff - Where on the firewall have you placed the grommet/entered the harness? I'll be using carpet, but I'm thinking of having a thick padding underneath the carpet for sound deadening, and should be able to conseal the harness underneath this. |

Not meaning to be gloomy but the 67 only has 2 fuses so consider extra fusing of any power circuit wires you run inside like this or you could end up with a fire inside instead of just a burnt wire outside. Rich |

N C Nielsen I've just finished rewiring my MGBGT using one of Dan Masters' Powerblock systems. This was a lot of work, spread over the winter months, but I'm pleased with the result. This system uses 8 fuses and 7 relays so Rich's fears may be overcome. I wired the car with as little wiring underneath as possible. I ran cables alongside the transmission tunnel, inside conduit but one certainly couldn't pull any cable in or out, back to the heel-board where the bodywork comes up to cover the batteries. I then went through the heel-board and up over the rear axle and then back into the luggage compartment for connection to the rear lamps and the fuel pump. All the cables were covered with split-conduit and secured to the bodywork with P-clips. If you want any more details including rather dim pictures, pleaase contact me off line. Regards Peter |
