MG MGB Technical - seal up the doglegs?

Getting ready to replace the doglegs. The only rust was obviously from the dirt and then water that finds its way into the dogleg through the gap between the dogleg and rocker panel. Has anyone tried sealing that up with silicone, etc. to prevent rust?

Greg;
I have used Wax oil to saturate that area on Dee's Gt Bob

Woss a dogleg?

Olly,

A dogleg is what the dog lifts before peeing on the sills of MGBs, thereby causing rust and serious structural damage : )

I say seal up the dog's ding dong and he can't pee on the sills!!!!

Olly, I am with you,

When you say dogleg do you mean behind the doors where the box section rises to go over the wheel arch?

If so then are you referring to the ability of dirt and water to be able to get on top of this box section from under the car alongside the battery trays?

If the dog-leg is the cover panel that is part of the rear wing and goes over the aft-end of the sill, it is not welded, I used seam-sealer between the two when fitting then pressed more in afterwards but still leaving a clearly visible join. Painting over this shouldn't leave any access for moisture. The main problem with that panel is corrosion from the inside, particularly after a repair, at least the original was dip-painted after spot-welding, which is less likely to start rusting than MIG etc. welding anyway. Unless everything is hot it is no use spraying Waxoyl in through the access hole inside the cockpit immediately behind the door, the gap between sill and cover panel is so small it will not run down but just bridges the top. After replacing these panels I pour clean engine oil in that gap before waxoyling and put up with the dripping for a couple of days. If left unprotected it will start rusting immediately and take the covered part of the sill with it. The front is the same, although you can undo the bolts and pull the wing away a little to spray Waxoyl in there.

Yes Paul, that is a dogleg in American parlance. Thanks.

Paul;
In our hot summers Wax-oyl flows like motor oil! Bob
