MG MGB Technical - Servicing Help

I'll appologise now as this is going to make me look really thick.

I've just bought my first MG. ITs a MGB GT 1968 tartan red and i'm in love with it. I've decided to service it and bought the service kit from MGOC. I'm new to car mechanics but armed with the haynes manual i have managed to replace most of the filters etc supplied. However i'm stuck as to where the fuel filter, condenser and copper washer for drain plug should go.

Is the condenser from the distributor?
I can find no mention of the fuel filter in the haynes manual. Is this located in the fuel pump? If so where is the fuel pump??
Which drain plug is the copper washer for?

thanks and sorry for asking some stupidly easy questions which you are probably all rolling around laughing about. sorry.

Not yet but keep it up, bub! Just kidding you a bit. You will find great help on the site. Welcome to "B"-dom.

Yes condenser for the distributor
Fuel filters were fitted some years I believe. Not standard on my 69. Fuel pump behind the right rear wheel.
Washer for the oil drain plug.

Check out the MGBExperience where there is are links for service as follows:

and

and lot's more.

Detailed and based and better than the manual.

Good luck.

Cheers guys, the mgexperience page looks very useful.

i phoned MGOC to check if the fuel filter was standard on 68's and they said no but i could fit it just by inserting it the fuel line somewhere in the engine bay and this would be worthwhile.

Does anyone thing it would be worthwhile to do this or is it a case of trying to fix something that aint broke?
Mark

It shouldn't be neccessary, I wouldn't fit it if you aren't getting fuel overflow problems at the carbs, it's two more joints and a component that could fail and leak. But then, I've never changed the sump drain plug copper washer and not had any leaks, neither have I ever had a condenser fail. In future I'd just get the main service things like oil and filter, and plugs and points when appropriate. If you are tempted to check and adjust the valve clearances then I *would* replace the compressable rubber washers under the fixing bolts, these are rarely changed, go hard, and you will often get leaks from the gasket afterwards that a new gasket doesn't fix.

Hi Mark,

More a case of fixing something so it doesn't break in this case. Not an urgent job, but worthwhile not least because the fuel tank has a habit of rusting on the top surface causing lots of bits of rust to block your carbs some time in the future. Just stub out any cigarettes, cut through the flexible fuel line to the carbs in the engine bay (convenient for future maintenance). Make the cut clean so you don't have bits of rubber left in the line causing just the problem you're trying to prevent, and put the ends in hot water to soften them before fitting the filter. And check the arrows on the filter are pointing towards the carb. Reflect on a job well done and remember ther's always another to do. Have you considered K&N filters? Free-flow exhaust? Fast road cam? Adjustable shocks? Years of fun ahead!
