MG MGB Technical - Servo Question

On my 79 MGB the pushrod that goes from servo into the master cylinder seems to be loose--the toothed clip that holds it in place is not holding it firmly in place and am concerned if this should be assembled like this.
When I disassembled the units the reaction disc that sits behind this pushrod had fallen out and was in with the big spring.The reaction pad is now in place and pushrod installed but the retainer ring does not hold it firmly in place .Any comments or suggestions appreciated --Thanks--Gil

Having just had one of these in bits for rebuild, I think that the toothed clip is of a decorative nature :-) If the length of the pushrod is set correctly, then it should be impossible for it to fall out of its seat, clip or no, as the "gap" between the seat (reaction disc) and the Master Cylinder piston should remain constant at all times. Either way, it's a cheesy clip that won't take any real effort to pull out as it's on a taper.
However, you state that your reaction disc had dropped out. As far as I can make out, the only way that this can possibly happen (since the pushrod seats on it) is if the spring returns the servo plate faster than the Master Cylinder piston returns. This should never happen as the M/C piston should push back against the servo at all times, unless the Master Cylinder is highly suspect........

The big rubber bellows on mine seems coated in talcum powder.

Should I sprinkle some of Avon's finest on it before re-assembly.?

Tim--thanks for your input --much along what I was thinking --when I bought the car the master cylinder was disconnected and might well have been cause of the dislocated disc. I do agree if everything is properly lined up then the clip is not important. Good to have a second opinion--Thanks.
