MG MGB Technical - Single Carb Manifold??????

I know I've asked this before...but not really found what I need. I would like to revert back to a single carb setup for my 78B....single ZS or SU...for simplicity and economy...I have a Peco header/system which I want to continue to use so want to find an intake manifold that is NOT part of the exhaust manifold also. I see some postings in the archives and references to the Marina Manifold...but this is also a combo unit even though it is setup to breath well. I have a perfect 38000 miles only ZS carb on my bench and want to try it instead of the finicky weber I currently have which is OK...but has always idled lumpy and only gives 24mpg. Does anyone know if an A Series manifold would fit or are they too small? I see a beautiful custom job that Bill Kindig put on his car a few years ago...he still around?

P J,

Back in Australia we have a thing called an Austin 1800, I have taken the manifolds off them in the past and used them for economy runs... I think at the time though I had to cut off the exhaust portion.
My best was 83.99MPG

But they do not go well with extractors, so you have to use spaces to get the clearance.

A friend made his manifold out of bent exhaust pipe, making it much longer thus giving more torque...

My vote is stick with the Weber and reduce the pump jet.

Hope this helps.

PJ,
It is my understanding that Barry Kindig unfortunately passed away. His set-up was custom made by Mike Brown out of Oregon. I too had Mike make me the exact same set-up which I used on the head he port and polished for me. I dynoed the car (79 MGB LE) and saw approximately 76 HP at the rear wheels. I have subsequently put a supercharger on my car and no longer need the set-up. If you are interested and are willing to help me recoup some of my initial investemt send me an e-mail at ratpat at direcway dot com. The set-up consists of an intake manifold and ram tube that has a K & N filter attached to the end that sits in the depression along the inner left fender well. I suspect you must have seen the set-up on Barry's car in the archives and mine is exactly the same as his. The ram tube is custom made for the air filter side of the ZS and will not attach to the SU HIF 44 although the intake manifold will accept such a carb as well as I believe the HS 6. Let me know if you are interested.

You can also hacksaw the carb manifold from the exhaust on the original Zenith setup for a 78.
