MG MGB Technical - Slave cyl clutch
Ealier we discussed a problem i had with my clutch on a 67Gt, and find out to be the flexible pipe was bent( too short)and would not allow the fluid to run free, most probably the slave pump not been proper one. the pipe fitting entrance is on the side where it should be on the back, and the drain plug on the side. Is there more than one slave pump types? Alfredo |

Check the bhive website. He currently has one on sale and there is a picture of the slave cyl for reference. |

The bleed nipple should be on top and the flex pipe entry on the bottom. |

Yes Paul, i have noticed now, my fault i bought a slave pump on the ebay, in a better condition, and fit it straight away, and there is a diference, this one if definatly pipe entrance at top and nipple at bottom, probably for latest model Mg. Thanks |

Staying with the headline, but changing the subject: I have been having trouble with the clutch slave cylinder on a conversion to a 280Z transmission. The Z cylinder hose fitting is a different thread and some parties have adapted the MGB slave cylinder to the Z transmission. Rivergate sells a custom machined slave cylinder for $89. The problem is the lack of clutch travel. The Z lever arm to the throwout bearing has the fulcrum close to the center. The B closer to the outside of the trans. The result is the Z throwout bearing carrier arm/lever has a longer travel/range than the B. The B slave cylinder will only push the lever part of the way and the clutch will not fully release. After some frustration I looked again at the Z slave cylinder. The hose fitting is smaller than the B. Drilled the hole and tapped it for 7/16 fine thread and voila! the MGB hose connects right up to it and there is now loads of clutch travel. The clutch pedal has gone from feather weight to heavy. Now I need a slightly smaller diameter master cylinder to get a perfect compromise between pressure and travel. The 5th gear at .745 really brings the engine rpms down for cruising. There is a noticeable difference from the .82 of the late MGB o'drive. Also approx 50 lbs lighter. With my 195 55 15 tires which are about 5% smaller diameter, the o'drive makes the car much more driveable. Barry |

Barry, maybe we should take this to another thread but.. are you saying that the Z tranny has an overdrive? Also, could you have the master cyl sleeved and the piston shaved to match? I think a shop like Napa should be able to handle the task. |

Chris is right. Didn't I read somewhere a while back that the slave cylinders were being sent boxed with the nipple in the wrong hole? Luigi |

Components are often not model specific but quite possibly applicable to more than one manufacturer let alone models. Some may need the fittings one way round, some the other, and the part manufacturer doesn't know what it will be used on. Caveat Emptor. |
