MG MGB Technical - Slave Cylinder Leak

After a period of hibernation, I noticed my master cylinder resevoir was empty. Discovered that its all leaked out via the slave cylinder, pours out from around the boot cover. 2 questions: Can you salvage a leaky slave cylinder AND after correcting that problem, other than topping off and bleeding the system, are there any hidden problems associated w/ an empty resevoir I should check b/f hitting the road?

How long has the car bein hibernating? If its been some time you're better off buying a new slave cylinder and clutch master. They arent all that expensive and you have the peace of mind that they should cause no problems.

I agree with William. You need to pull the slave off anyway. For $50 you can have a brandy new one. Replace the flex hose while your at it. Bleed and you're off. I did this early spring and replaced the master too. The kit cost $120. Well worth the money and possible future aggravation. If you need tips on bleeding, I can help there too. -Brian.

Because the Slave cylinder is aluminum, it generally corrodes pretty easily unless silicone fluid or regular flushings of glycol fluid have been part of the operating system. Therefore, many folks would tell you to not waste your time on rebuilding and just spring for the new hose and cylinder - cheap insurance and peace of mind.

My experience says that the best one can hope for from any aluminum cylinder is about one rebuild and that there are no guarantees as to how long the rebuild will last. Even when silicone fluid is used, aluminum tends to wear faster than cast iron so rebuilding is often still a question mark unless yours shows exceptionally little or no wear. JME
