MG MGB Technical - Soild State Fuel Pumps
Hi, Basically my SU pump has bitten the dust. Has anybody used the pointless SU pumps & are they any better? Cheers Scott |

Scott, The original SU fuel pump (on my 1980 MGB) lasted until 1993. In 1993 I replaced the original with one of the new SU solid state fuel pumps and it is still going strong. On my mgtf I put an original style SU fuel pump on in 1990 and it is still running just fine. If the original style starts to malfunction on the TF I will replace it with the solid state type David |

Scott- I chose the solid state SU Fuel Pump when it became obviuos that my OE pump was not worth rebuilding. So far it's been reliable. It even makes the clicking sound of the original. |

Most aftermarket pumps require a fuel pressure regulator to get even a modest 5 psi pump back down to the SU specific 1.5-2 psi, to prevent blowing the float valves off their seats. That said, I have used a Holley press. reg. and three different varieties of aftermarket pumps successfully. Why so many? not because any were bad, but because I like to experiment. The experiments proved that any fuel pump that can deliver the right volume at the right pressure will do just fine. |

Scott, I spent lots of money rebuilding my points style SU fuel pump, then had it in and out of the car about three times adjusting it. You're right, pointless is better, however SU pointless is expensive I bet. Simply by-pass the existing pump (leave it as a decoration if you like, thats all its good for). Like Bob I'm using a Japanese pump (from a '83 SUBARU by chance), it works way better than the SU. The dead space at the top of the engine compartment, passenger side, above the guard is the perfect place to hide a fuel pump. I wrapped it loosly in a peice of foam rubber mat and just poked it in there, easy. |

Peter, Sorry, but I just have to ask. I can understand that the pump is 'hidden'. How do you hide the foam rubber mat? Have you got it just resting in there, or is it secured in some way? Regards Roger |

Roger, In the subaru the pump is located at the top/back portside of the engine compartment. It hangs from a bracket via small rubber mounts. This (I guess)would be to cut down on potential noise (same "clump clump" as an SU, but not as quite as loud, and a little faster). I thought it a good idea to have some similiar sort of insulation for the MG and I happened to have one of those cheap high density foam camping mats (from K mart) within arms reach I cut off a piece and wrapped it loosly around the Subaru fuel pump(which is much smaller than the SU). Loosly because I wished to let a little air circulate around it, being uncertain as to how hot this unit got (not very it turns out). I then tucked the the whole lot into position. The bit of foam mat in conjunction with the fuel lines (filter before the pump) also stops the pump moving around. This was a temporary arangment at the time and 2 months later is working perfectly. |

Scott, The upside of the OE is that if it does fail on the road a tap with a blunt instrument is usually enough to get you home. Never had a prob with SU's delivering fuel even running a 4.6V8 and saves expense of regulator. Paul |

Gentleman; I'd rather not have to beat on a pump. did it to much in the 70s. Honda pump pressure aok. I mount in right fender behind wheel in trunk on roadster and on bump above axle under wood hinge support in Gt. RELIABLE!!!!! Bob |

Yes and No. My V8 came with a solid-state SU-type pump and after repeated problems with it I replaced it with a pointy one. Wouldn't use a pointless again, points being good for 30 years is good enough for me. |
