MG MGB Technical - Solenoid.
I have fitted a new Advanced Autowire harness and I am starting to wire it in in stages starting with the ignition and engine electrics. All the rest of the wiring is not attached and all the ends are taped so as not to short.
I have wired the ignition switch and have (or had)the following: Power to the starter motor, Power to the fuel pump, Power to the ignition circuit Spark at the plugs. New battery and a new earth lead connected to a freshly cleaned area. I had been turning the engine over without ignition to get the oil pressure up. I then connected the ignition and continued turning over the engine, hoping to get some life from the engine. Then I heard a bang, not the engine firing unfortunately. Now when I turn the key I do not get any signs of life. I have checked the fuses but they are all ok. The starter is an old one but had been turning over great. Is it likely to be the solenoid that gave up after all the cranking, if so what is the best way to prove or disprove? |

You will have to use a meter or test-lamp to see where you have voltage and where you don't. After a rewire like this, and where something has suddenly stopped working, it could be absolutely anything from the battery, through the ignition switch, starter relay (1970-on) to the solenoid. As far as standard wiring is concerned there are no fuses involved in cranking or running. |

Thanks Paul When I tried it this morning all was working as I would expect so I have spent most of the day rechecking all the connections. So far so good😀. |
