MG MGB Technical - Solving Rust Problems

Our favourite 4 letter word....RUST can be treated.

I've tripped across a very excellent Web Page titled Chemical Rust Treatment Comparisons on the Solo Hobbit's VW bus site.

This is located at

http://geocities.com/goodytommy/rust/

and provides a great explanation of the forces eating our cute little cars. I applied some of this new-found knowledge this past weekend and was very pleased with the rust treatment process used.

I highly recommend a tour of this site for anyone interested in what's eating their metal work.

Best regards,

Joe

PS. I don't have any relationship with the site, the owner or the products listed other than an appreciation of the fine work presented.

Joe Lucas has done a fine job in drawing our attention to this.

I wonder if anyone in the UK can help identify similar products we can buy locally.

The only one I know about is Kurust, but I seem to recall Practical Classics doing a survey many years ago.

Hi,
Look for a product POR-15

Is POR-15 available in the UK.

I may have my own answer, is it available from someone like Frosts.?

If so, it makes it a pricey mail order job, at a rather high price anyway.

All the stuff in the States seems to available from regular retail outfits, presumably at competitive prices.

Who knows of an effective rust killer available at our local friendly parts shop.

Alan

Alan,
You are right - POR-15 is available only from Frost in the UK as far as I know. It is not a rust killer, but is an extremely hard glossy black paint that sticks to rust and seals it so the air is kept out. If the corrosion is not coming from behind, that will prevent it from getting any worse. POR-15 is expensive and doesn't keep well once opened, but by 'eck it does what it says on the tin. The main problems with it are:
It goes hard in the tin very easily.
Once dry, the surface is so shiny ordinary paint won't stick to it.
If you get it on your hands you are marked for life - or at least until the skin is renewed.

On the plus side it is incredibly hard once dry and will not peel off rusty metal and does not mark with stone chips. I seem to recall that the manufacturers have marketed a primer that will adhere to it so that you can apply a colour top coat to it, but as far as I know Frost don't sell it. If you could satisfactorily top coat it, it would make an ideal undercoat for valances and lower body parts.

Try http://www.por15.com. They'll ship anywhere.

So POR-15 is available from Frosts which definitely makes it a pricey mail order job.

I was hoping someone would come up with a product available in the High Street ( Main Street )sold at competitive prices.

It seems anything to do with restoration in the UK has to be pricey, whereas in the States they seem to be able to walk into Wal-Mart and get everything at bottom dollar.

Why can't we.
Alan

It's a trade-off for having to pay extortionate prices for machine work when we rebuild our engines ;-).

Yes, but is it true that Wal-Mart has used mgb roadsters and GT models on shelves in the automotive section? Fantasies, fantasies. . .

My local Wal-Mart was out of B's so I settled for a PB Airline Coupe.
