MG MGB Technical - Sooty plugs
After some considerable period of normal running, my 71 B now runs rich, ie the plugs are black and sooty. I have not changed anything, although the car was not run for several months over the winter. Checking with the trusty Colo(u)rtune showed nothing amiss. Any suggestions? Tony |

Tony. Install new plugs, take it for a drive on the interstate or motorway, cut the engine near a rest stop, let the engine cool and inspect the plugs then. If they are still sooty, you are running rich. I have found the plugs to get somewhat sooty when I have to use the choke to get started. But, the electrode area is normally clean which is what you are really worried about from a performance standpoint. The plugs also seem to get more sooty in around town driving, hence, you need about 20 minutes of highway driving and new plugs to really use that check. The type of fuel being used will also have an effect on "reading" the plugs. Unleaded seems to have less of a sooty nature than the old, leaded fuel. Les |
