MG MGB Technical - Sourcing the correct split pin?

Yes yet another question bet you are all getting annoyed with me now.

I sorted the issue with the throttle cable and put a starlock washer on which sorted my issue. My problem now is that when I took it all apart the bit the connects the cable to the throttle had this split pin (pictured below) in it and won't go back in. Not a problem? Just replace it I hear you say!

My issue is I cannot find anywhere that does a split pin small enough, I've tried motor parts direct who were useless, had a little look on Moss but couldn't find it successfully and no doubt will have the same issue with MGB Hive.

Looking for any suggestions, thank in advance.

MD Rice

How small is it? I've got packs from Halfords before now, which contain some small enough for the handbrake clevis pins, which are pretty thin.
Paul Hunt

It's really small about 3/4's of an inch in length I think.
MD Rice

Ricey,
better to ask than not

you do need to look harder when looking at suppliers catalogues especially electronic ones, also of course check for their errors and omissions by cross referencing

MGOC Spares has it as GHF502 (11p) and Brown & Gammon have GHF502 as 'Split pin 3/32 INCH x 1.5 INCH (PACK 10)
Price: 0.70 + 0.14 VAT = £ 0.84'

Sussex Classic Parts has GHF502 as 3/32" x 1" so less to scratch your hand on and an example of how the same part can vary from different suppliers

B&G and others also show that throttle cable guide I think you got in the end(?)

note some catalogues items are mis-catalogued or unusually placed in sub-sections

note here this is under engine controls as a sub-section of engine, not misplaced but perhaps not obvious until you know - (part 31) - http://www.mgocspares.co.uk/acatalog/MGOC_SPARES_CONTROLS___MGB__19.html

I think you gave up on the notes before the completing the set that would cover this sort of thing
Nigel Atkins

I would much rather use a paper catalogue.

I'm forever looking through M*ss subsections to find something that you think would be somewhere else!

The diameter is the critical dimension! Tell me the size and an address I'll put you a couple in the post.
Allan Reeling

As Allan said, diameter matters, length, just cut to suit, making sure that one leg is longer than the other, it helps to spread the legs.

Herb
Herb Adler

Allan,
the diameter, from four different sources including Paul's mgb-stuff, is 3/32"

Dave,
if Ricey weren't so tight, like soooooooooo many other classic car owners, he might consider buying the reprint of the factory Parts Catalogue, best as paper but also electronic on the DVD which also has the factory Workshop Manual and the divine Driver's Handbooks
Nigel Atkins

I have the MGOC reprints of the parts catalogues for both MGB and midget.

Unfortunately, when they were reprinted, any parts that were NLA at that time were excluded. It makes it difficult when searching for NOS parts.
Dave O'Neill2

Ricey,
Either measure the dia of the pin you have or the dia of the hole by using a drill!! Hells bells this is not brain surgery!!!
Allan Reeling

"so less to scratch your hand on"

If they are too long then cut them down! With offset legs, of course.
Paul Hunt

"It helps to spread the legs", now where have I heard that before?????
Allan Reeling

I really am sorry guys I'm such a mong. I'm not that mechanically minded it's all a new learning curve for me. I used to part own a accident repair workshop where we did modifications also. I can do bodywork and put Lamborghini doors on a 300ZX but when it comes to engines it's all new to me. So bare with me I'm learning but very slowly.

Stupid question Allen but what should I use to measure it? And in what unit? I have a tape measure and a ruler. Sorry about the delay in replies as well I'm currently packing up my house to move a week Friday and on nights too.

Thanks so much for everything so far.
Ricey
MD Rice

Ricey,
is there any point to me posting on your threads - for the third time it's 3/32" (wide) and length can be 1" - or 1.25" or 1.5" and cut down if required
Nigel Atkins

Sorry Nigel, I did read that but forgot by the time I read all the posts. I was on nights last night and had 4 hours sleep as had to be up to take my son to the doctors.

Allen what Nigel said, that's the size I need,

Also Nigel, I'm not tight just careful with my cash. Where would I get one of the reprint factory catalogues and I will deep into my 'tight' ;) purse strings and purchase one and then I won't have to pester and annoy you guys as much. (That'd be the day eh!)
MD Rice

Ricey,
I thought you knew what a miserable old git I was, don't take what I put too seriously as it's meant tongue in check (except the bit about tight fisted classic car owners as they have caused me no end of hassle over the years)

if you want to email me and I'll sent you my full set of notes that gives info on the paper reprints and DVD but you do need to read them and refer to them when required for them to be of any use

in case you don't want to here's one source for the reprint of the factory Parts Catalogue (Ref:0008) - http://www.mgocshop.co.uk/catalog/Online_Catalogue_Parts_Lists_3.html

the reprint of the factory Workshop Manual - (or if you search the Archives there are links to free PDF downloads) - (Ref: 0001) - http://www.mgocshop.co.uk/catalog/Workshop_Manuals.html

one source for the DVD with both above on and Driver's Handbooks - but they've changed and gone up in price! - http://www.rimmerbros.co.uk/Item--i-HTP2003
Nigel Atkins

I don't know for sure, but I would check out the local auto parts store, for a split pin assortment. Find the one you need now and keep the others for future use.

Hes not lying.....Mr Rice!

Just kidding...Nigels a good guy but can be hard to decipher....sometimes!

Be prepared to read more manuals than a vicker trying to save your sinners soul day!

(And he calls Nigel hard to decipher ...)

I some times wonder how much better or worse it would be if I wore my glasses
