MG MGB Technical - Sparkrite info, please.

Hi all.

Does anyone have any info on the Sparkrite TX 2002 contactless ignition module please ?.
The description on the box suggests that it is intended to be used with some sort of magnetic or optical pick-up, but it has a switch with an 'auxiliary' position (like earlier models) and it appears to work with conventional points.

Any links to Sparkrite diagrams or other info would be appreciated.

Thanks.. Don

Hi Don

I have the circuit diagram and PCB layout for the SX2000, and a spare built-up PCB (no case). I can scan the documents and email them if that will be of any use? But that will be later tonight when I get home from work. You are also welcome to the built-up PCB if that helps, but send me an address off-group to send it to.

I used the SX2000 on my Triumph Spitfire and then the BGT when I first purchased it, it connects to the points, but can be switched to revert to points only should the unit fail.

The design is quite old by todays standards, given the points replacement Hall Effect type devices that are on the market at the moment. However, Ive noted that the pertronix Ignitor module can vary up to 3deg depending on engine speed. So if you set your points up correctly, it will be more accurate then a hall/magnet triggered device.

There were at least two Sparkrites - one utilised the existing points and could be switched between direct points and points-fired electronic, another may well have used a solid-state trigger that was permanent electronic, as a solid-state trigger would not have been able to fire the coil directly - more than once anyway! Modern solid-state devices like Pertronix and Magnetronic can fire the coil directly, but the same question mark over benefit still applies.

I still have a Sparkrite X4 in a garage drawer which I built from a kit, which is of the former type. I never found it gave any improvement in anything over a correctly setup and maintained points system, so although I took it off the car I originally fitted it to when I sold it I never bothered fitting it to anything else.

FWIW I also have an Aerofan in the same drawer, also from the 70s, anyone remember those? Another benfitless expense.
