MG MGB Technical - Speedo Calibration?? how??

Hi Guys,

I have a recent rivergate 5-speed conversion on my 1980 MGB. The car has the original 85 mph speedometer. Problem is, the speedo is now clocking some 10mph too fast. (i.e reads 60, actually running 50, reads 70, actually running 60, etc).

My question is, car the speedo's be calibrated? If so, HOW??

Thanks in advance,
Danny

Follow a friend (with a calibrated speedo) for ten (or whatever)miles, then compare odometers. ie yours will read about 10 point something miles. If you mean how do you reset the speedo then you must buy a little "box of cogs" from places which specialise in this stuff. Check out a Hot Rod magazine, thats where they usually advertise. The local guy charges about $100 for a small box which goes on the end of the speedo cable. You will still need to do the 10 mile thing so that the "local guy" can assemble you a "box of cogs"

If you live in the USA and near a major metro area there will be a speedo shop that can do the job. Alternatively, contact Palo Alto Speedometer for some expert advice.

I don't think I would recommend Speedy Cables in the UK. They've had my MG Magnette speedo for 8 weeks now, having originally quoted 4 weeks for recalibration, and they don't seem to return calls or emails.

I have a Rivergate kit on my midget, and opted for their speedo conversion box, as it includes the right angle drive which made fitting the cable easier. However if you already have the cable installed then the recalibration you require should be within the range of internal adjustment on the speedo.

Steven,
this is the first I've heard of an internal adjuster on the speedo and would like to give it a go. How is this done?, do you adjust the distance between the magnet and the disk? How do you go about doing this?
Peter

Talk to Bill Perry at Rivergate.
He will be able to change the gear ratio in the angle drive that connects to the transmission.
I installed the Rivergate kit last winter and had the same problem. Mine was off the same amount as yours.
