MG MGB Technical - Spin-on Filter Designation
Hi All, I'm looking for the Fram Oil Filter designation for the Moss spin-on oil filter adapter on a '63 MGB. The PO had an AC Delco filter that might be sufficient for a lawn mower, and the NAPA/Wix replacement I got is even smaller. Thanks, Greg |

Greg it is a gfe173 for anti syphon and a gfe166 which is off of a classic austin/morris/bl mini Ste |

I used Fram briefly, but the drain-back was appalling even though they were advertised as having an improved valve, worse than the bog-standard Champion/Halfords/Unipart. Volvo/Mann and K&N Gold were better, but while the Volvo was only a bit dearer than normal the K&N was several times the price but only as good as the Volvo. |

Hi Greg: If it is the Moss hanging filter module replacement; then you can use a FRAM 3600. Please read Barney Gaylords MG Guru site regarding issues and tolerances associated with this installation. Good Luck: Rich Boris 67 B roadster |

Read the recent thread on same same subject on the MGA board. There is a very thorough study on the filters |

The oil filter info on MG Guru site and MGA BBS was very helpful. Thanks a lot. |

Greg, I'd seriously consider the NAPA Gold 1515...it is a Wix filter and for my money the best on the market...I put Fram near the bottom... FWIW Bob Doc |

Thanks everybody. After all of the reading and advice, I ended up with the NAPA Gold 1516. It's about twice as big as the one that was on the car. Greg |

FWIW the metal Volvo oil filter used on the old Vo's up to and including the non-turbo 99's had a Volvo part number of 3517857. When I worked for VNA (1975-1982)the oil filters were made for us by Wix Mfg. to Volvo specs. cheers Gary 79 MGB |
