MG MGB Technical - Spin-on Oil Filter
Hello! Does anybody know where a spin-on oil filter assembly can be purchased for a 1968 MGB? I can find them for the 62-67 models, through the 'usual suspects' such as Moss Motors, but none seem to be available for MGB's made after 1967. |

Paul. The 68B did not have a spin on oil filter. Most probably, you have the 18V oil filter adapter installed. That is what I am running on my 68GT. If so, contact John Parker, at the BAP store on Country Club, and ask him to get you the Mann W 917 oil filter. Have been using them for years. There is also an Arizona MG Club, which just held its annual car show, All British Car Days, yesterday at the Champlain Fighter Museum. If you have questions, e-mail me. Les |

My wife just traded her 1990 Volvo 240, 197,000 miles and I never had the head off. Compression on the cylinders was within 5 lbs. of each other. I always used Mann oil filters and Castrol 20w50. My friend has repair shop and I have seen many cars with over 200,000 using Castrol. Which brings me two my question. Our 2000 V40 has a canster filter, do canister filters help oil flow? It there any advantage to canister oil filters? |

Thanks to all that have e-mailed me with suggestions. I apparently wasn't clear on one thing: I'm looking for the part that bolts on to the engine block that will convert the filter from the canister type to the spin-on type. |

Paul, You need Moss part # 460-910, however is is listed as NA. I suggest you try Bob at G & B Ent. Les has recommended them in the past. Last year they had a GT console on eBay and I was high bidder. I sent a check with shipping instructions and sent an email telling them the check was in the mail. Bob shipped the console the next business day, he didn't know me, he had my email saying a check was on the way and eBay feedback profile, and he goes ahead and ships the merchandise. Note I said check not money order. BTW the console was actually better then I expected. I'm sure they will treat you right. Victoria British (800.255.0088) advertises one top load assembly spin-on type for the 70-80 B. Part #9-1065 but it is $160 + shipping. You can try several of the MG used parts places like MG Cosas in Texas. Could be cheaper and OE. I have a '77 assembly on my '69. BTW, if you do replace it, make sure you remove the old o-ring between the assembly and the block. Its usually cemented in by time and heat. Sometimes it actually feels like its part of the block and made of metal instead of rubber. P.S. also make sure you have it on 'right' and the center bolt (with a copper washer) snug or you can get a nasty surprise when you start your car. Don't ask me how I know. P.S.S. Its not easy to install the assembly with the engine in place and get the o-ring on just right. I used a smear of grease to hold it in place while I adjusted the assembly for reassembly.:) |

I picked mine up (for my'69) at a local wrecking yard for $45. I think that may be the only place you find one. |

I can vouch for Luigi's warning about the o-ring. Mine failed on my '75 'B Sunday, and I had a heck of time chiseling it out from the block. My job was made infinately easier with the use of a small mirror mounted on a telescoping rod. I could also add that the job is easiest from above with the distributor cap removed. DGV |

Paul, Just get the spin on assembly used for the a late rubber bumper car. It bolts right up and will convert your car to spin on. I just did mine, I think it was off of a '78. Be sure to get a new gasket that goes between the housing and the block. Bill |

Dan is on the money. I did mine with an old round fender mirror head below and working from the top with a sharp utility knife was lucky enough to get the old o ring out in a matter of minutes (well, less than half an hour). I got my filter head from the Mr. Barnhill, the Autoist. |

Or you can hie on down to your local Pick-A-Part self service junkyard and get the whole schmeer from one of the dead B's or midgets in there , I get them all the time for my buddies Metropolitans . I found it easier to work from underneath when I changed the special square section o-ring . -Nate |
