MG MGB Technical - Spot Light Circuit

Hi,

Does anybody happen to have a circuit diagram for retro fitting twin spots to a '71 B. I've got two circuits from "The pages of Bee & Vee" (Terrific site)One is for factory fitted spots operating directly off the old dip switch and a more modern one where they will operate only when the side lights are on, but independent of the head lights. I want to have power to the switch only when the headlights are on main beam, therefore swiching off when I dip the headlights and coming back on when I flip the head back on. Master control of the Spots would be by a toggle switch with an LED warning light on the dash. I recognise the need to use a relay which I figure can be powered from a general 12v circuit, but can I parallel off a heavier wire from the head light connection on the Direction indicator/Healight flasher stalk, or would there be too much power drain through the terminal?
Thanks
Ken

Ken,

You got mail!

I didn't show an LED, but it would be simple to add one parallel to the lights. ie, off pin 30 of the relay (or pin 86 if it's more convenient). Or, you could use a switch with a built-in lamp.

I don't think it would be a good idea to take power from the light switch - go directly to the battery post on the solenoid, fused of course.

Fuses in the driving light circuit, yes, in the headlight circuit, no.

Use the after-market circuit as shown on those pages, but instead of connecting from the red circuit through the in-line fuse and manual switch to operate the relay, connect from the blue/white (main beam) circuit instead. Because the factory circuit you are picking up (in either case) is only being used to operate a relay, and not the lights themselves, the additional load on the factory wiring and switches is negligible. Using the blue/white to operate the relay via the manual switch will mean that spot lights are *only* available with main beam, and only if the spot light manual switch is also on, which is what I think you are asking for.

Many thanks guys, much appreciated.
