MG MGB Technical - stage 1 carbs?
hi one and all, just been perousing the mg owners club parts catalogue and notice they sell SU carbs "to stage 1 spec", only trouble is it doesn't say what this means. anyone any clues? |

The BL special tuning booklet describes Stage 1 road tune as follows - "An increase of some 4bhp may be acheived by the fitting of twin 45mm (1.75in) diameter SU carburettors to the standard engine. The larger carburettors can be obtained under Part No C-AUD 505 and all the necessary parts and instructions for fitting these are included in the installation kit number STN 0041. Ignition timing: 8 degrees BTDC Carburation: KP needles, blue spring, .100 in jets." |

Wow, 4 bhp. You'll really notice that...NOT. Many tuners reckon adding bigger carbs without making the cylinder head breathe more freely is a waste of money. If you are interested in this (expensive) subject, get a copy of Peter Burgess book "How to Power Tune MGB Engines". I think the club sell it. It gives a good idea of where the B engine is weak, and what it will take to make worthwhile gains. In my experience, buying strap-on tuning bits is almost always disappointing. The big gains are to be made deeper in the engine. Mike |

I believe these are SU HS6's, there's a copy of the BMC Special Tuning manual on the internet somewhere - I don't have the link to hand, but it's in the archives. I've got it here if you want it emailed - 2.3mb. Tim. |

Found the link to the Special Tuning manual - http://www.1978mgmidget.com/manuals_and_booklets.html Tells you all about the different stages of tune. By stage 7 they were getting 130 bhp - but as Mike says, most of the changes were for 1 or 2 horses here and there. |
