MG MGB Technical - Starter motor wiring
Hello, I am just about to start rewiring my 1971 mgb roadster (negative earth). I have just ran the cable from the battery to the starter motor but it is unclear which terminal (of the starter motor) to connect it to. The terminals aren't labeled: 1. Can anyone recall if the connection from the battery connects to the upper or lower (when positioned in the car) terminal. 2. Secondly, this is a constant concern for me, i know which cable should go to which item but its never clear which terminal to connect to. Is there a rule or system to follow? The wiring diagrams aren't that detailed. Regards Alex |

Alex There are 2 large terminals (studs) on the back end of the solenoid, the one closest to the motor should already have a thick lead that goes into the motor body, the other terminal ie the one furthest for the motor is the one you want. The solenoid hangs below the motor so it's the lowest one you want when it's fitted. Bob |

As far as 2 goes I don't think there is much scope for getting things wrong. For the starter motor the diagram should show that the battery cable goes to the stud which *doesn't* go to the motor, so it is a matter of determining which one that is first. Different motors may have the studs in different places, so if you really can't see the cable to the motor then test each terminal in turn to the motor body with an ohmmeter, and the one that shows zero resistance is going to the motor, the one with infinite resistance is for the battery cable. |
